A second-half goal from Sergey Kisliak proved to be the winner as Belarus defeated South Korea 1-0 in this afternoon's international friendly in Austria.

In what was a poor match, goal-scoring opportunities were few and far between, and Kisliak's strike was the difference between the sides.

South Korea were looking to use the fixture to build confidence ahead of their World Cup opener against Greece on 12 June, while Belarus are preparing for Euro 2012 qualification by experimenting under German coach Bernd Stange.

The match itself however was a low-key affair, with both sides choosing to build from deeper and retain possession rather than focus on the offensive.

Korea clearly had more to play for, with a number of their squad players looking to stake their claim for a berth in the first eleven, but their efforts on goal were mainly from long range, and in a first half bereft of any clear goal-scoring opportunities.

Belarus played with a certain degree of freedom, and shocked the World Cup finalists just after the break by taking a surprise lead. Sergey Kisliak took advantage of static defending from the Red Devils to slot past Lee Woon-Jae and into the net.

Indeed, the Eastern Europeans should have doubled their lead ten minutes later. Frontman Vitali Rodionov, who plies his trade in his homeland with BATE Borisov, went through clear on goal, but as Woon-Jae advanced he dragged his shot wide of the target.

Korea were poor from the first minute, struggling to create, and showed no fluency. Ki Sung-Yueng and Chu-Young Park both had long range effort, but failed to test Anton Amelchenko, and their lack of urgency will be a concern for coach Huh Jung-Moo with the World Cup finals less than two weeks away.

In the end, Belarus were deserving of their win, and South Korea will have gained little from what a relatively uneventful encounter. They will have to improve significantly when the face European Champions Spain in midweek.
